Easy steps towards
Acquiring an Amateur Radio License

The Three License Classes
The FCC (Federal Communication Commission) sets the rules for acquiring an amateur radio license in the United States. There are presently three classes of licenses you may become eligible to attain after your studies. First is the Technician class license. Secondly, there is the General class license. Finally, and most prestigious, is the Extra (advanced) license class. There are many frequencies set aside for all amateur classes to enjoy using many communication types, which are referred to as modes. The higher the license class you achieve, the more privileges you will receive. Becoming an amateur of any level is a great achievement that will bring you much enjoyment.

Become An Amateur

In considering whether or not amateur radio is for you, keep this in mind. Amateur Radio has something for everyone. Also, preschoolers have passed these exams. Not to take anything away from these overly bright and motivated, young individuals, but the point here is that the exams cover only the basics of each level of licensing. The real learning starts after you have studied and passed and you are granted a station license. You will be pleased to know that yours, or your child's learning will increase at an individual rate and continue to do so for as long as you are involved in the hobby. The exams are merely to be sure that you know the basics of the hobby, general safety information, and the rules that will apply to you as a licensee. The level at which you start at will be determined by your knowledge of radio and electronics, and/or your ability to attain the knowledge needed to pass the level of exam in which you desire. There are unlimited sources of the information you will need. The technician class license provides opportunity for beginners to become involved and learn with hands on. The Technician Class license is the entry level class for which you will be required to take and pass a 35 question multiple choice written examination.  Morse code, at this level is optional. The technician license entitles you to use many frequencies and all communication modes that Amateur Radio has to offer. As an amateur radio technician, you will be entitled to all of the frequencies above 50 mhz that are assigned to the amateur service.

Even at the technician level you will be able to use handheld transceivers(HT's), as well as mobile, and fixed-unit base radios to communicate with other hams in you local area. You will be entitled to operate many modes such as, FM and AM voice, digital modes using your computer, amateur television(ATV), single-sideband voice and more. The wonderful thing about amateur radio is that nothing stops you from inventing a new mode or another new piece of equipment. That is what it is all about and that is how amateur radio was born. You can even make international radio contacts using satellites, and repeater systems with Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP). You can even contact the International Space Station (ISS). Nothing says that you can not own your own repeater system. The hobby is there for you to use and experiment. Oh, and you can make phone calls(auto patch) on some repeaters using your ham radio. Can you do all that with a cell phone, instant messenger, or Play Station?

Preparing For The Exam

Taking the time to prepare for the exam is your first step to becoming a ham.  Your best bet is to first locate a radio club in your area.  Some radio clubs offer ham radio classes in which they will help prepare you for the exam.  You may want to try getting a hold of a club member which can answer your questions.  You may even be invited to attend a local radio club meeting, as most clubs are open to the public.

If you cannot locate a club nearby or if by chance your local club does not offer classes, that's not a problem.  Publishers including the ARRL publishes handy study guides designed to help you learn the things you need to know in order to pass the exam.  You can read the full poll of questions and answers in which will be pulled for your exam as well.  How easy is that?!

Taking The Exam

Before taking the exam for the license you desire, you may wish to check the ARRL web site to locate a testing center near you. You may also contact a club in your area if you know of one. You may also use links from this site or the ARRL site to locate a club that is near you. Most local clubs will have testing sessions. Allot of clubs have training courses for you to take in order to get ready for the exams. Weather you take a course or not it is a good Idea to ask someone at the club or refer to the ARRL web site for study material. The ARRL has great materials covering everything you will need to learn to pass any of the exams for amateur radio. When you have taken the course or studied the proper materials and feel you are ready, you may wish to test yourself using the free practice exam at the top of this page. When you are able to pass the practice exams at a rate higher than 85% consistently then you will know you are truly ready. For the technician exam you must complete the test with a 71% or higher score to attain a FCC license to own and operate an amateur radio station. The Amateur Radio license examinations, commonly referred to as "V.E. Sessions", are administered by ham radio volunteers.  When you are ready, you will need to locate an exam session near you.  The ARRL's web site includes an Exam Session Search engine which will help you locate an exam session near you.  Check it out by clicking the link below...  If you happen to be ready at this point and are feeling confident, we wish you good luck!
